Culture, unity, and visibility

The First Nations Educational and Cultural Center supports students in their academic, personal, and professional journeys

Our story

Opened in April 2007, the First Nations Educational and Cultural Center is a department within the Office of Student Life. We are a central part of the cultural initiatives at IU Bloomington, which has a long history of advancing excellence through the transformative power of educational programs, recruitment, and outreach for all students.

Our mission:

  • To build a safe and supportive Native communities at IU Bloomington.
  • To actively support the recruitment and retention of Native and Indigenous students at IU Bloomington.
  • To connect with and provide support to students, faculty, and staff who have historical roots to the land that is present-day Indiana.
  • To provide educational opportunities that further awareness of contemporary issues within Native and Indigenous communities and create a campus environment that welcomes multiple perspectives on these issues.
Four people sit in a circle talking in a cozy room centered around a brick fireplace. Indigenous artwork, a feathered cultural display, woven baskets, and plants decorate the space, with a colorful First Nations painting hanging above the mantel. A small group gathers in a warmly decorated room. A smiling person with glasses sits in an armchair with their hands clasped, speaking with others in the foreground. Framed artwork hangs above dark wood paneling, and a tall window displays colorful cultural items. Two students sit together in a colorful lounge area, reading books near a sunlit window.

Our space is a central gathering place for Native American students at IU Bloomington and a hub for the Native experience on campus.
