Transition resources

Transitioning is a personal journey, and these resources can help you navigate social, medical, legal, and administrative aspects of the process while at IU.

  • Gender-affirming healthcare: The IU Student Health Center offers gender affirming and LGBTQ+ care, including hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Financial assistance may be available. Ask your provider during an appointment or call 812-855-0082 for more information.
  • Local healthcare providers: Students from the Maurer School of Law and Bloomington Pride have compiled a list of transgender-affirming healthcare providers in the Bloomington area.
  • IU username and email changes: IU students can update their IU username and email address to reflect their name. A Knowledge Base article provides step-by-step instructions for completing the process.
  • Legal name changes: Indiana residents can begin the legal name change process through Indiana’s online Self-Service Legal Center. The process includes completing the required forms, publishing notice of your intent to change your name, and appearing before a judge.
  • Social Security records: After legally changing your name, you should update your Social Security card. This can be done through the Social Security Administration website or by visiting a local SSA office, including the Bloomington office at 515 W. Patterson Drive.
  • Driver’s license or state ID: Once your legal name change is complete, update your driver's license or state-issued ID. Indiana residents can find requirements through the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), while out-of-state students should contact their home state's licensing agency.
  • Legal assistance: Students who pay the Student Activity Fee have access to free legal advice and representation through Student Legal Services, which can help with questions about the name change process.
  • Emotional support: Transitioning can be both rewarding and challenging. Student groups, counseling services, and other campus resources are available to provide support and connection throughout your journey.
