Voices of LGBTQ+ excellence

The Speaking of Excellence Speaker Series celebrates the achievements, experiences, and voices of LGBTQ+ leaders, artists, advocates, and changemakers. Through engaging lectures and conversations with nationally recognized speakers, the series creates opportunities for connection and celebration of LGBTQ+ excellence.

Building understanding through conversation

The Speaking of Excellence Speaker Series brings together the IU Bloomington and broader community to learn from the experiences, achievements, and perspectives of accomplished LGBTQ+ leaders, artists, advocates, and changemakers. Through keynote lectures and meaningful conversations, the series promotes greater understanding, challenges bias, and celebrates the contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals.

Made possible through private philanthropy and partnerships across IU Bloomington, the series reflects the LGBTQ+ Culture Center’s commitment to fostering inclusion, supporting identity exploration, and creating opportunities for connection and learning. Each speaker helps advance the series’ goals to:

  • Highlight LGBTQ+ excellence and inspire new perspectives
  • Affirm and celebrate LGBTQ+ identities and experiences
  • Support individuals as they explore and understand their own identities

Previous speakers:

  • Pete Buttigieg
  • Dance Theatre of Harlem
  • Caleb Hearon
  • Jesse Tyler Ferguson
  • Byron Perkins
  • Hunter Schafer
  • George Takei

The Speaking of Excellence Speaker Series is made possible by private philanthropy and in partnership with various entities across IU Bloomington.

I feel a certain urgent obligation to do whatever I can to help people like my own trans grandchild and others within the LGBTQ+ community.
